About Tiny Taught

Neonatal education, made clear and practical

Tiny Taught exists because good neonatal teaching is hard to find in one place. The evidence is scattered across journals, guidelines disagree with each other, and the things that matter at three in the morning are rarely the things a textbook puts first. This site is my attempt to close that gap — for neonatologists, fellows, residents, paediatricians and neonatal nurses, and for the families whose babies we look after.

Who I am

I am Dr Shiva Shankar, a consultant neonatologist and clinical associate professor based in Dubai. I direct a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship programme, sit on a postgraduate paediatric examination board, and review fellowship programmes against international training standards. Before moving to the Gulf I trained and taught in the UK.

Everything here is written in a personal capacity. Nothing on this site represents the views of any hospital, university or examination body I work with.

How the content is made

Every article, factsheet and question starts from primary sources — the trial, the guideline, the original paper — not from a summary of a summary. Claims are referenced back to those sources so you can check them yourself, and where something rests on expert consensus or local practice rather than trial evidence, it is labelled as such. Where guidelines genuinely disagree, I say so rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.

I use AI tools to help draft and structure material. Every clinical claim is then checked against the source before it goes live, and any error that gets through is mine.

What you’ll find here

Learning Hub — teaching videos and written articles, grouped by clinical topic.
Exam Preparation — best-of-five practice questions with explanations, and OSCE stations with model answers.
Resources — the journals, guidelines, textbooks and calculators I actually use.
Parents — plain-language explanations for families.

An important caveat

This site is for education. It does not replace your local guidelines, senior review or your own clinical judgement, and it is not medical advice for any individual baby. Thresholds and doses are for orientation only — always check your unit’s formulary.
